Oxy-Acetylene Torches
Part of the album: FRCC Weld Training
Oxy-acetylene cutting torches are really fun to use. They were probably the most dangerous thing that I was playing with, mostly because they burn the hottest, and when you light them, they have a good 12 inch flame. After failing several times trying to light the torch correctly, I finally found a good way to light them. Once lit - and with the proper oxygen and acetylene combination, I practiced cutting on various pieced of 3/8" scrap metal. It blows my mind how easily you can cut through metal with one of these torches. But then again, it was burning at 2000+ degrees F. That's pretty hot... Once I got a feel for it, I cut out the letters in my name and put it on a name plate (see the previous blog post).
Not only did I get a chance to play with oxy-acetylene cutting torches, but I got to play with some oxy-acetylene welding too. That was the hardest welding that I ever tried to do and never got a good bead down. How anyone welded with this method (which was one of the first forms of welding) is beyond me.
