Sanbona Day 2

Morning Walk

Morning Walk

Photo Notes:

We got started on our morning safari a little bit early. The guide knew the lions were walking down the road, so we headed in that direction.

Middle of the Road

Middle of the Road

Photo Notes:

The lions walked down the road for about a quarter-mile. Every once and a while, the guide would turn the car on and reverse down the road a few hundred feet. After watching them walk towards us for about 5 minutes, the guide let the lions walk by the car. The lions were so close I could have stuck my hand out and touched them.

White Lions

Photo Notes:

I've never seen white lions before, so this was a special treat. The group that we saw was 1 large male, 3 young male cubs, and two females. Only 3 of the 6 lions were white lions.

Walking the Road

Walking the Road

Photo Notes:

It was really cool to see the lions walking down the road. This was the same road that we drove on our own on getting to the lodge, so we could have stumbled upon some wild animals, but luckily (unluckily?) we didn't.

Photo Notes:

This is kind of what I imagined Africa looking like... I guess I imagined it without the mountains. Other than that, it's spot on with my brain.

Searching for Food

Searching for Food

Photo Notes:

We found this cheetah on foot on a hike. The guide knew the cheetah was in this area, he just didn't know exactly where - which was a little concerning... We found the cheetah on the top of a ledge looking into the valley for her next meal.

Camouflaged

Photo Notes:

The cheetah is so well camouflaged. I always thought that the spots would make the cheetah east to spot (ha! Pun...), but it's pretty obvious that the spots make the cheetah blend in even more into the surroundings.

The herd of elephants we saw were scattered across the road. In the distance, you can see another vehicle. The road we were on is a public road, and the driver of this vehicle got so scared he shut off his car and laid down in his seat. It was pretty funny.

Unfortunately, it didn't rain that night. I say unfortunately because the area is in such a severe drought that there is almost no water for the animals.

Sleepy Lions

Photo Notes:

We found the lions napping and bathing in the sun on a ridge. Our guide got out of the car (about 30 feet from the lions) and told us to get our cameras ready. He crunched down on some grass and immediately all the lions rose their heads and looked at us.
