Courtyard
Part of the album: Robben Island
This is the courtyard that the prisoners would do their work in. In the far right corner was Nelson Mandela's garden. Our guide told a story about how the prisoners found a way to put notes inside tennis balls and they would throw them over the wall into different courtyards. The guards didn't think anything of why a ball would be thrown into the courtyard and then be thrown back a few minutes later. At one point, the guards were told by the warden that the guards would not be able to outsmart the prisoners, so the guards were told to become smarter.
