Limestone Quarry

There is a lot of history in this photo. This is the limestone quarry that the political prisoners worked at while serving their sentences on Robben Island. You can see the guard shack to the left, a cave in the center-left, and a pile of rocks on the right-hand side. The cave is the location where the prisoners would go to the bathroom and also get out of the heat to eat their lunches, if they were given one. Since the lunch room doubled as a bathroom, the guards never went in there, which gave the political prisoners a chance to talk about whatever they wanted. The rock pile on the right was started by Nelson Mandela when he, and other political prisoners visited the prison after it was shut down to recant their stories for historical reasons. Nelson Mandela, without saying a word, picked up a stone and placed it on the ground. The rest of the political prisoners followed him in doing the same. The limestone wall started where the rock pile is, giving everyone who visits the island just how much work they did.
